The Raft - FIAR Volume 4 Co-op

One week after our scorching hot day for field day, we headed to the Eno River for co-op.  Wouldn't you know that the day was on the cooler side and overcast.  It didn't matter at all though!  We had a blast!

We started as always with the reading of the story.  Can you picture a more scenic spot to read a story about a boy who discovers all sorts of things in nature on and in a river?



We were briefly interupted by this.



The story paused as you can't compete with a big vehicle fording a river.  LOL


After reading the story, it was time to head to a small island IN the river!!!  Ooooh, was the water COLD!  I don't think the kids even noticed at all. 



 I watched my Daniel head out with the group.  :-)  He has not participated fully in this co-op and he really does well when we are outside.  It just always makes my heart feel good when he is able to join in.  Its hard to explain, and maybe it doesn't even make sense, the challenges he faces.  He has come a long way though and my heart rejoices to see the progress he has made!



In case you were wondering, they are all wearing socks under their crocs, sandals and swim shoes.  This was to help prevent leeches from attaching to feet!!!  YUCK!  Apparantly the presence of leeches is a good thing because it means the water quality is really good and healthy.  Thankfully, no leeches were found on this outing!

The activity on the island was to learn more about the course of the Eno River.  Each child drew a "labelled marker" out of the pot.  Each marker had the name of a city or location along the Eno river - starting in the mountains and ending at the sea.  Daniel drew Cape Hatteras.  Really appropriate since he LoVeS the lighthouses and was even wearing a t-shirt with Hatteras on the front of it this day!



Joshua built the town of Smithfield.  Each child was given an object that could go along with their site OR an idea of what was located at the site for them to build or replicate.  Smithfield is known for its great BBQ.  He was wishing he had brought his pig Silly Bandz, but when with what he had.



Let me back up as I'm not starting at the beginning.  The job for the children was to build a replica of the Eno river.  Each site was numbered so that they could go in order from the beginning of the river until the end.  They worked to build their location and then began digging a trail for the river to follow.



Of course, they needed water for the river.



It took numerous trips to "fill" our river, but they didn't seem to mind at all!

What a fun, hands-on activity that the children LOVED!



After all this hard work, they were ready for a snack.  They had a bagged lunch with a pbj sandwich, an apple and animal crackers.  There was lemonade to drink.



Now it was time to learn a little more about the wildlife in the area.  The children were given a sheet with pictures from this area.  (Actual pictures of actual things seen here just a week before!)  One side had animals and critters.



The other side had plants and flowers.



They were given nets to use to find things.  They also had boxes or jars into which they could put the things that they found. 



They needed no encouragement to get back into the river again!



After spending time hunting ... and finding... they gathered together so that they could see what each person had found.



It was most helpful that Miss Laura knows an amazing amount about all sorts of plants, bugs and animals!  She helped the kids to identify what they had found and also shared interested facts about a number of them!

A large spider and the smaller bugs are water striders (I think - a nymph of a more common bug?).  Sorry, my details on bugs are really sketchy at best.

The co-op ended with the children decorating and floating rafts in the river. 



What a fun morning!  I know I couldn't post about co-op without saying how thankful I am to be a part of this group.  I'm thankful for the gifts, talents and experience that each mom has brought.  I'm thankful for this sweet group of children and how much fun it has been to hang out and learn with them.

We have one more co-op after this one which just happened yesterday.  I'll post more about it soon.

Field Day

I'm still playing catch-up for the month of May ... and determined to get close soon!   We had our last co-op today and it was a lot of fun!  More hopefully in a few more days. 

For the last couple of years, we have ended our school year/field trip days with our FIAR group with Field Games.  It's a fun way for our kids to be able to enjoy some of the same games we did as kids and things that are hard to do without a large group. 



We divide the kids up by age.  The oldest group was 11 and up.  The middle group is 5-10 and then there is a little kid area with some things for the youngest kids (though no formal games).  I had signed up to help with the little kids before realizing that Daniel wasn't in this age group any more.  (sniff, sniff)  When I realized it, I thought there was no way that he would participate in the games with me in a different area.  (He will typically not go do much of anything in a different environment without me there.)  A friend graciously agreed to cover for me so that I could hang out with Daniel.

I sent my 3 little boys to the races which were their first events while I was helping Eliana.  Guess what?  Daniel went happily without me!  :-)  He also started to participate in the races!  I can't tell you how encouraging it is to see him able to make some steps like this.  I know this may seem small, but with all that he deals with regarding the SPD (sensory processing disorder), so many things overwhelm him.  I'm grateful to see this step of progress.  I know it was because he had his brothers with him.

backwards race,



three-legged race



and sack race.



Joshua and Daniel were in the 3-legged race together and were a little mismatched by size. 



They still won though!  (That was a surprise to me!)  I loved seeing Daniel having fun.  It just did my mama's heart good!



In the other area, the kids competed in broad jump and softball throw.  I don't have many pictures of these events as things were going on simultaneously and honestly, it was so much fun watching the races.  They also played horseshoes.

The older kids competed in the same events as the younger ones.  Some of these photos just tickled me.  Can't you just see the frenzy from the photos?







The sack races added extra challenges for the older kids because they don't fit in them as well.  It makes for some funny moments too!





All in all, it was a fun day. 



I'm thankful for good friends - for me and for the kids.  I'm thankful for healthy bodies (I don't think I'll ever take that for granted).  I'm thankful for a beautiful day.  I'm thankful God has blessed me in so many ways!  More later on co-op and other May happenings.

Changes to the blog

Hi Friends,

I've been asked by several people and just thought I'd post a little more about it here.  The hosting site (homeschoolblogger) has gone through some major changes.  We were warned, but it was still hard to really know what to expect.

The initial changeover started early, early Sunday morning (it was late Sat night for me and I was up).  It took several days for me to be able to access my blog fully and be able to post. 

The biggest changes at first are just the visuals of the blog.  We lost all of that - headers, sidebards, links, personalization.  For the moment we are able to choose from a variety of templates.  I chose one but am still hoping to personalize my blog so that it fits *ME* better.  I miss my header with Eliana's picture and her ticker.  Miss my links too.  I think I'll be able to add them back, but it will take time. 

There are a lot of nice new features to the blog.  My favorite - it saves posts as you write them!!!  I've lost posts numerous times and that was always really frustrating.  I'm excited about this feature.  There are other features, but it's going to take me awhile to figure them all out.

I would LOVE any tips or suggestions anyone might have!  I want to figure out how to change the about me photo.  I want to add a photo to the header.  (I tried last night but it didn't work.  I tried Eliana's old picture, but it cropped it too much.  Then I tried a family photo which I thought would be great cropped, but it was too big.  I don't know how to make it smaller.  I don't know why one picture worked and the other didn't.  Did I mention that I'm not technical at all?!)

Oh, there is a search feature for my blog too.  Oh, I thought I'd lost all of my catagories, but I just saw that they transferred too!  Yippee!

Can anyone explain "tags"?  What are they and how do they work?

Hope that helps to explain what happened.  I'd love to get back the old look of my blog and if anyone can help, I'd love some tips!

Off to go do some planning.  We have our last co-op tomorrow and it's here.  And I'm teaching.  I'm looking forward to a fun day!

Happy Mother's Day

I'm going to try to post pictures. It may take me a bit to get the new blogging system here figured out. It looks like there will be a lot more features. I'm not a techy person though, so it will take me some time.

Mother's Day was a sweet day. I woke up and got ready early so that I could have time to relax some before going to church. I knew that my sweet daughter would have something planned and I was not disappointed.

Our friends Catherine, Hannah and Lauren were visiting. We planned to go to the early church service at 9am. Roger was working this morning so we were getting the kids up and ready as best we could.

We were greeted with a lovely table and two chairs fit for queens when we walked downstairs. There was a vase of flowers, a beautifully set table, a several page document with sweet notes and sayings in it ... and did I mention the chairs? One of our family traditions is to pull in the really comfortable chairs for the person of honor on days like this.

Hannah and Rebecca cooked us a lovely, multi-course breakfast!!! We had orange Julius to drink (one of my favorites!), a yogurt, berry, granola parfait, mini quiches (that's not quite right, but I'm not sure what they were called. I know Rebecca will tell me in the morning.), sausage and french toast! A meal for royalty and it was all soooo good!



Sorry this is sideways, I can't figure out how to edit in this new format.  Notice the candy bars in the background?  Each of my little  boys and Rebecca gave me candy for Mother's Day along with beautiful hand-made cards.



Note the pirate Mother's Day card behind the food.  LOL  Gotta love little boys!It was all delicious and a LOT of food to eat.

I didn't get a great picture of Catherine and I - but here is a one that's not too bad (thought not too great either - lol).



After being treated like Queens, we got ready for church.  We enjoyed a nice service with a great message.  After service, more of our family came and Rebecca and I went to Sunday school with the littler ones.

Each of my three youngest made something for me while they were at church too.  I just love things that my children make for me!

The   card on the far left is from Isaiah.  He wrote something he would do for or with me on Mother's Day.  His list included read a book, play wii, cook and take out the trash.  He was very focused on accomplishing his list too!

The flower in the middle is from Daniel.  It's actually a pen with my favorite flower (pansies) taped onto it.  It goes into a pot of rocks so that it is always available for me to use!

The card on the right is from Eliana.  Lots of beautiful things glued onto a big heart.  Rebeccca helped her to write the words. 

All very sweet.  I don't have pictures of the other cards that they made for me.  Oops.



I was treated to all foods cooked for me all day.  I loved this as cooking is not one of my favorite things to do.  I had a great sandwich for lunch, tacos for supper and even an afternoon snack.

Rebecca was the initiator of most of the food for the day.  She knows my favorites and uses her love language to serve me and give gifts through cooking.  My afternoon snack was baked cheese sticks and a frozen cranberry limeade slushie!!!  Can you say yummy?  All were delicious.

Thank you to my sweet family for making my day special.  I love being a mom.  It's definitely one of the best things that has ever happened to me.

I'm always blessed to have a wonderful mom of my own (who has one daughter that is much slacker than my own daughter - sorry mom!)  Thank you Mom for being such a wonderful example to me in so many areas.  I am thankful for your love of our family and love of Jesus.  I'm thankful to be able to spend time with you sharing hobbies, laughter and fun.  I'm also thankful you have been there for me during the times that were hard.  I couldn't be more blessed.  I love you Mom!

I'm going to close as I've been working on this post for awhile.  I'm trying to figure out the  new format of this blog - and there are a lot of fun and new features.  Please let me know if there is something I'm doing that makes things hard to read.  This is going to be a learning process.  (I'm up for tips and advice on anything so I don't have to figure it all out by trial and error!)

Strawberries

Last year we missed the chance to pick them (it was a short rainy season and none left when we went).  This year we decided to go early.  What an incredible bunch of strawberries!  They were HUGE and plentiful!

It was a beautiful day.  We met friends and the kids picked a LOT! 

Christopher wasn't picking with us as he RAN to meet us there and arrived later than he thought.  He had a bit of a detour and ended up running about 17 or 18 miles.  (Whew!  I can't even imagine - well, imagining is about all I could do.)  He is preparing for a half marathon this week-end and full marathon later in the summer.  He is doing a great job!

Back to strawberries.  Eliana was shown how to pick them and loved putting them in the baskets.

But she wouldn't taste one!  Silly girl.  They were so juicy too!

Nobody else had any trouble wanting to taste.

It was fun and there was work to do when we got home!  We all loved the quantity of smoothies that were made that day!  Yummy!  (This is not even all of the berries we picked!)

I hope that times like this will be ones that my kids will remember.  I hope they'll remember working together and enjoy (literally) the fruits of their labor.  I love hearing them recall stories - and they remember details that I don't.  It is a blessing to have shared memories with so many others.  Thank you God!
